Sciatica is one of the most common back pain conditions – and it is also one of the most misunderstood. For many of our Flower Mound sciatica patients, this diagnosis can be a scary, overwhelming experience. If you have recently been diagnosed with sciatica – or suspect that you are experiencing this painful condition – it is natural to worry about how sciatica will compromise your quality of life. Chiropractic care is an effective, drug-free, non-surgical treatment for managing your sciatica and lower back pain.
Sciatica is characterized by a radiating, numbing or throbbing pain sensation in the lower back, buttocks and legs. Patients typically experience sensations of tingling and numbness that radiate through the lower body. This numbness may be followed by periods of full-blown shooting pain radiating down one or both legs. In advanced cases, this pain and numbness may reach all the way down to a patient’s feet and toes, causing discomfort and numbness.
Sciatica is symptomatic of a spinal misalignment. For many patients, a herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine triggers their pain. This disc places pressure on the sciatic nerve, which in turn triggers pain. Because sciatica is triggered by a mechanical misalignment, traditional medical treatments like drugs or surgery only offer limited relief. While drugs can provide lower back pain relief, this pain relief is limited. Drugs work by numbing the brain’s perception of pain signals; pain will return once medication wears off. Surgery for lower back pain can also be risky; in fact, some of our patients come to us after failed surgery actually worsens their back pain.
Chiropractic care is an effective alternative to medication and surgery. Unlike medication that only “numbs” pain signals, chiropractic care addresses the underlying spinal misalignment that is responsible for your lower back pain. Our chiropractor Dr. Butler will first perform diagnostic tests to determine the precise cause for your pain. Once we have identified the spinal subluxation triggering your pain, Dr. Butler will create a customized treatment plan to restore proper spinal alignment and alleviate back pain. Most patients experience significant pain relief after just one or two chiropractic adjustments. Depending on the severity of your pain symptoms, we may recommend a series of adjustments over several weeks. Our goal with every treatment plan is to relieve pain as quickly and effectively as possible.
If your sciatica pain is due to a personal injury, you may also benefit from complementary care including physiotherapy. Many patients with sciatica pain subtly adjust their bodies’ movements in order to minimize their pain. Unfortunately, these movement adjustments can place additional strain on the spine and lead to future injury. Physiotherapy helps to manage pain and restore full mobility to the body.
Our chiropractor Dr. Butler has more than 25 years of experience treating Flower Mound, Lewisville and Highland Village patients for sciatica and lower back pain. To learn more about chiropractic care and pain relief for Flower Mound sciatica patients, contact us today at 972-221-7533.
